Vinyl siding has a mixed reputation in the building industry. It has often been considered a cheap substitute for wood, however it is favored in some markets because it does not need to be painted or stained as does wood. As it ages, it does change in appearance. Yellowing, bleaching, and "chalking" all occur as a result of rather complex chemical changes brought on by exposure to heat, UV light, and moisture. According to a recent article in the Journal of Vinyl Technology, yellowing occurs to a greater extent in wetter northern climates than in the arid, sunny Southwest.
